Sherwin Carlquist studied botany at the University of California, Berkeley, with postdoctoral study at Harvard University. He has specialized in studies on plant anatomy (chiefly wood anatomy) and island biology (7 books, nearly 300 scientific papers). He had a successful career, especially in teaching and research, as a professor at Pomona College and Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, California.

In his earlier days, he also studied art–particularly composition and design. I first discovered his  book  NATURAL  MAN  in  1991.  The huge black and white book has an amazing collection of uncut men shot in natural settings. He has since published a series of photography art coffee table books  featuring uncut men! This work is very beautiful, and not pornographic. But the lover of the natural man will surely appreciate his work!

The scenery used includes Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Kilauea, and many other great natural areas of the American Southwest and Hawaii. The models are diverse in race and age–goodlooking and with excellent bodies, but selected because of their photogenic qualities, not because they qualify as beefcake with muscles attainable only with steroids.

The newest book is  UNCUT!  A photo-essay with attitude devoted to an underappreciated feature of human male anatomy: the foreskin.

UNCUT is like no other book you have ever seen.

UNCUT is also crammed with an amazing amount of correct factual material, including some facts known to only a few doctors. A mixture of adolescent awe and adult sophistication toward the subject is conveyed in the book by the use of that most successful of all voyeurs, the camera. And yet there is true reverence here for the nature of biological structures and the work that they do. This is not one of those slick overpriced books, monotonously sexy, that get called “hot” and then are quickly consigned to a shelf.

 It is also uncategorizable (surely its strength), certain to annoy those who assign books to particular sections in bookstores: Does it belong in Humor? Health? Art? Pornography?

Gregory Brian Byng  FOUND ME on Facebook last week and asked me to be his friend!
What a hottie! Gregory is from Montreal and keeps quite busy modeling and running his company.  He was recently shot by photography Thomas Synnamon  for his book Sleepless .

Ahhhhh, the Sixties!

Porn was so different then. Before the world of the Internet – there was BOBS WORLD and AMG.

Bob Mizer spent 48 years making photos and films for his Athletic Model Guild, and 41 years publishing Physique Pictorial, America’s first, and most explicitly gay physique magazine. His diaries, kept from the age of eight, make it clear that he was openly homosexual from his late teens, but until the age of 42 he lived and worked in his mother’s L.A. rooming house, where his strict ethical code prevented him from fully expressing his fantasies. For 24 years he worked in black and white and never showed a completely naked man, but following his mother’s death in 1964 Mizer built a kingdom dedicated to the pleasures of male flesh, and photographed fully nude men in explicit poses and psychedelically saturated colors.

In the 1970s and ’80s Bob Mizer’s compound, centered around the old rooming house, became home to dozens of his young models, who lived outdoors on couches and porch gliders among the chickens, geese, goats and monkeys, Roman statuary, cast off Christmas trees and other sundry props that featured in his increasingly quirky films and photography.

Sometimes called the Hugh Hefner of gay publishing for his pioneering magazine (republished in entirety by TASCHEN in 1997), Mizer influenced figures in art and society from David Hockney–who first came to America partly to meet Bob Mizer–to California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who modeled for Mizer in 1975.

Of all places, I met this guy online, where I live most of my life!  LOREN   JOHNSON  is  a  Tantric Yoga and Chi Kung Instructor. There is something so beautiful about the art of the male nude in black and white, that is sometimes lost these days.


In the pre-Stonewall era before the advent of the gay rights movement, male nude photography was kept underground. Photographers feared police confiscation, harassment, and worse. This volume uncovers the work of ten different photographers produced during this suppressive period—images hidden away for a generation in private collections and closed archives. The majority have never been published. A full range of styles is included: gleaming muscle gods shot in the physique magazine style, sun-dappled outdoor nudes from the 1960s, and artful black-and-white studio portraits by George Platt Lynes. Uncovered restores a lost chapter to the history of the male nude photograph and reintroduces more than one hundred unsung classics of male erotic photography to the world.
